STATEMENT

I treat painting as a structure that has to be kept standing.

The surfaces are built from earth, sand, oxides and binder, laid down layer over layer until they behave less like paint than like a wall or a floor: they settle, crack, flake and wear. Most of the surface is left to that slow behaviour. What happens on it is small and late — a seam, a fault, a fragment of fabric pressed into the ground, a trace rising from beneath.

In a smaller group of works the structure is opened and then held. Nothing is restored; each intervention is kept to what the surface requires and remains legible as provisional, so that the work carries the record of every attempt to hold it together.

The material does not illustrate. It behaves. I only decide how long to keep it from falling.
